The First Polish Settler

In 1857, the first Polish settlers immigrated to Portage County. Michael Von Koziczkowski, his wife, and their nine children came to Stevens Point in search of cheap farmland near the Wisconsin River. It's said that Michael first arrived with only $50 to spare and a dream of running a successful farm. A year after he and his family settled in Portage County, three more Polish families that he had written to had decided to immigrate as well.

History of the Polish Farmers Market

Stevens Point's Farmers Market began in 1870 when Polish farmers began selling crops, animals, eggs and vegetables in what is now known as the Mathias Mitchell Public Square. It was great opportunity for farmers to market their produce and form connections with the community. It is an event that is still held today and is Wisconsin's longest running farmers market.

Dozynki Harvest Festival

The Dozynki Harvest Festival is a long-standing tradition in Polish culture. Did you know that the festival was originally created to celebrate farmers after their long year of labor and harvesting crops? Dozynki Harvest festival is held in the fall to signify the end of the farming season. Throughout the two-day event, you can experience food, dancing, music, art, history, and plenty of family-friendly activities! The Stevens Point Dozynki Harvest Festival is held by the Polish Heritage Awareness Society of Central Wisconsin annually.
