  • Self-guided auto or bicycle tour, winding through glacier terrain, wooded country-side, lakes and farmland. Portage County is the first Polish rural settlement in the state and second in the United States. Most of the tour is located on quiet, rural roads winding through glacial terrain with wooded countryside, lakes, and farm land. The small communities, imposing churches and quaint roadside shrines create a pastoral and spiritual landscape not unlike the Kaszuby area in northern Poland (from which the earliest Polish settlers came beginning in 1857). A road map of Portage County is recommended for those unfamiliar with the area. Tour information and maps can be found at the Visitor Information Center.
