Looking for a road trip, mixed with the autumn hues? Fall is the best time to hit the road in the Stevens Point Area. Hop in the car, gather your family, and use these routes to guide you along the northern, eastern, and southern edges of Portage County for the best fall color the area has to offer.
As you wind your way to the northern edge of Portage County there are many fun stops to make along your fall color drive. Begin your trip on Old Wausau Road, be sure to take a good peek at the Wisconsin River's fall beauty. For the best view, take a detour and stop by Bullheads Bar and Grill, with a killer view of fall color along the Wisconsin River (and a great place for a bite). Then continue north, to see how the color and the water surround you along the beautiful stretch near Lake DuBay, before stopping at the local favorite, Mullins Cheese. For the uninitiated, scope out the fresh (and squeaky) curds still warm on the counter. If you want to stretch your legs for a bit, scope out Lake DuBay Park or visit Little Bear Hemlocks State Natural Area, before continuing on in search of fall color.
The eastern edge of Portage County will take you around the countryside and through charming small towns. Start your trip in Plover, by stopping at the Korean War Memorial to commemorate those who have served, before heading east towards the rolling hills and tree-lined roads. Get out of the car and see the change of seasons up-close by hiking a portion of the Tomorrow River State Trail, or making a pit-stop at Standing Rocks County Park. Then, continue on the route to reach some of the most stunning tree-lined spots, including the stretch of road that leads you into Lake Emily County Park. If you need a break for lunch, check out The Landmark, and depending on the day of the week, you can even stop by the barrel-aging giant Central Waters Brewing Company for more local flavor. Start heading back, and detour into the community of Nelsonville. Definitely capture the fall views of the historic Rising Star Mill along the banks of the Tomorrow River. If you are heading through on a weekend, plan to stop at Ruby Coffee Roasters. Continue through the region, and wiggle to towards Polonia, part of the Polish Heritage Trail, before wrapping up your trip with a slice of homemade pie at the Polonia Cafe.
Discover the fall colors of the southern edge of Portage County by traveling through countryside, grasslands, and forests, with some hidden gems along the route. Start your trip heading west from Plover on Highway 54. For a quick detour, check out Altenburg's for family fun, before continuing the fall color tour. As you're traveling on Highway F, stretch your legs at Buena Vista Quarry State Natural Area and appreciate the fall weather around you. For some yummy food with a lakeside view, try Two Lakes Supper Club for a bite to eat and a peek at Washburn and Bass Lake. As you're finishing up your trip, take a detour and stop by Hartman Creek State Park for some outdoor recreation before heading back to Plover.
