Outdoor Recreation Buff
Walk, bike, paddle, hike...you do it all! Your always-on-the-go personality means you're constantly seeking new adventures. Your exploratory nature and active lifestyle go hand in hand. You book a hotel or choose a restaurant solely based on which locations are accessible by recreation trails.
Day One
- Grab your gear to fish 6,380-acres of Lake DuBay, a hotbed for northern pike, walleye, bass and panfish.
- If fishing isn’t your style, the Stevens Point Area boasts miles of waterways for pontooning, waterskiing, tubing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, sail boating and canoeing.
- For an all-encompassing stop, explore Standing Rocks County Park which features a dog exercise area, field archery course, trails for hiking, mountain biking (and Fat Tire), snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.
- Pedal, hike or snowmobile 24-miles of the Tomorrow River State Trail. For a more reflective outing, pay tribute at the Korean War Memorial of Wisconsin before unwinding at Lake Pacawa Park.
Day Two
- Tee off on the green or hit a ball around an indoor tennis court at SentryWorld Sports Complex.
- Looking to sharpen your birdwatching skills? See over 268 species at the George Mead Wildlife Area, scour through Buena Vista Grasslands or walk the trails at Godfrey & Maybelle Erickson Audubon Park.
- For more fun, discover 280-acres at Schmeeckle Reserve before learning about the state’s environmental history at the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.
- Hike through the wooded landscape in Steinhaugen Recreation Area, one of the newest addition to the Portage County Parks Department.
Day Three
- Try indoor skating at K.B. Willett Ice Arena or spend a weekend of outdoor fun at Lake Emily County Park. (Don’t forget to check out Portage County Parks camping options too!)
- Stroll through the Plover River segment of the Green Circle Trail for a combination of outdoor recreation and secluded natural beauty.
- Paddle the Plover River, backwaters of the Wisconsin River, trout streams like the Tomorrow River and additional waterways including McDill Pond, the Stevens Point Flowage or Mill Creek for more variety.
- Visit Dewey Marsh, a 6,000-acre wildlife area that features a public shooting range and hunting area.
Extras
- When conditions exist, break out snowshoes to trek the Ice Age Trail (Emmons-Hartman Creek segment).
- For more seasonal fun, head to Iverson Park for ice skating, tobogganing, cross-country skiing or sledding. Iverson also features baseball diamonds, nature trails, picnic areas and a beach in warmer conditions.
- Test out local disc golf courses including Standing Rocks County Park, Mead Park, Yulga and McDill Pond.
- Go horseback riding in the warmer months or experience a ride through the quiet winter woods by horse-drawn sleigh at Wild West Campground & Corral.
- Splash around and dive in to Copps Municipal Pool, and be sure to test out the waterslide too!
