  • An exhibit commemorating the centennial of the National Parks Service and the life of Wisconsin conservationist John Muir will be displayed at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point October 3-21.

    Held at the University Library in Albertson Hall, 900 Reserve St., Stevens Point, the exhibit is on loan from the Wisconsin Historical Society. Eight panels include images and manuscripts that explore Muir’s youth in Wisconsin, his advocacy for national parks, views on environmental issues and his writings.

    Along with the Muir exhibit, the University Library offers the following free activities that are open to the public:

    •         Friday, Oct. 6, 11 a.m.-noon, “Wisconsin’s John Muir,” University Library
    An illustrated presentation about Muir’s life, including his youth in central Wisconsin, his exploration of the High Sierra and Alaska and his leadership in protecting the American wilderness. The presenter is state archivist and 1985 UW-Stevens Point alumnus Matt Blessing.
    •         Friday, Oct. 13, 5-6 p.m., “Interpretive Walk” of campus
    Meet at the University Library lobby for a tour led by Assistant Professor Kendra Liddicoat and Jake Tlachac, accompanied by Muir’s thoughts and images.
    •         Conservation Hall of Fame, Schmeeckle Reserve Visitors Center
    Muir is a 1985 inductee in the Conservation Hall of Fame. It  is open seven days a week, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., at 2419 North Point Dr., Stevens Point.

    UW-Stevens Point’s Museum of Natural History in Albertson Hall will offer Muir books and t-shirts for sale. The library also has more than 150 books and reports on Muir, available through a catalog search or browsing the subject area on the fifth floor (call area QH31).
