  • Overview
  • Portage County Executive Patty Dreier is hosting this special event on Saturday, January 20, 2018, to raise funds and awareness "in harmony" for two causes: Portage County newest park, Steinhaugen, and the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra (CWSO) which will be celebrating its 70th season this year. "It's my way of sharing some of what I love--nature and music--while we raise funds for both great causes," said Dreier. "Also, I thought this would be a great way to celebrate as I look toward my transition from this public office in April." Dr. Lawrence Leviton, UW-Stevens Point Professor of Cello and Co-Principal Cellist with the CWSO, will share music at Jordan Park Lodge where the event starts. Gary Speckmann (Portage County Parks Director retiring Jan 13) will join Dreier in presenting the story of the 270-acre Steinhaugen Recreation Area highlighting its history, development and features. Steinhaugen opened in 2016. The event will start at Jordan Park Lodge where Dr. Leviton will share music prior to the brief presentation about Steinhaugen. Hot chocolate, wassail, and cookies will be served. After the presentation (about 4 p.m.), those wishing to participate in the outdoor portion of the event may join Dreier and carpool/caravan to Steinhaugen located about 6 miles northeast of Jordan Park on Bentley Road. A one-mile trail walk will be lit with torches for self-guided walks or a guided winter walk with County Executive Dreier. The recommended donation will be split between CWSO ("So You Think You Can Conduct" contest) and Steinhaugen for an informational kiosk to be created for its entrance. If participants wish to attend only the first part of the event inside the lodge at Jordan Park, that is fine!
