George W. Mead Wildlife Area
Looking for a vast open space to hike? Explore the 80 miles available at the George W. Mead Wildlife Area this winter. Not sure where to start with so much room to explore? Start with the Ephemeral Boardwalk Trail, for an easy 2-mile trek with a variety of views.
Green Circle Trail
Enjoy just over 20-miles worth of trails along the Green Circle Trail this season. Explore a multitude of terrain hiking along boardwalks, through gorgeous wooded areas, paved paths, and more.
Note: hiking is not allowed on the Plover River segment as it is a groomed ski trail in the winter.

Wander through the 280-acre Schmeeckle Reserve that is open all winter long. With 5-miles of trails throughout the reserve, breathtaking winter views are always in store. Hike the loop around Lake Joanis or warm up in the Visitors Center after exploring.
Think the Sculpture Park is just a summer thing? Think again! The half-mile trail is open year-round and just as fun in the winter. View a mix of regional and national artwork accompanied by incredible winter views and don't miss iconic pieces like the Elk Centaur or Sand County Bench.
Standing Rocks County Park
With approximately 10-miles for hiking in the winter, Standing Rocks is a great spot to get out and about. Looking for more than hiking? The park also has cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails as well as fat tire biking trails.

State Natural Areas
There are 11 different state natural areas within Portage County and each has plenty of space for hiking. While there are no designated trails, you can pave your own path and enjoy the picturesque winter views of any state-natural area.
Steinhaugen Recreation Area
Tucked away in northeastern Portage County, you'll find the 270-acre Steinhaugen Recreation Area. It is a managed forest and nature preserve with plenty of hiking opportunities throughout.
