THE BIRON FLOWAGE

River Characteristics

This Wisconsin River impoundment covers 2,078 acres and is located between Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids. Flowage depth averages 8-10 feet with the deepest areas running about 26 feet. The bottom is mostly sand and gravel with some rock piles and lots of shoreline wood and flooded stump fields. Vegetation is limited but there are some areas with milfoil, pondweed, or lily pad beds in very shallow water.

Note that water levels on the Wisconsin River can fluctuate quickly resulting in changing and dangerous conditions. Call 800-775-6404 for water conditions. Please use extreme caution.

Fishery

The Biron Flowage is a quality Musky fishery, with 40-inches fairly common and catches of 50-inchers documented! The Smallmouth Bass population is excellent with a chance to catch and release a 20-incher. Walleyes are numerous. Fishing for Channel Catfish seems to get better every year.

Hot Spots

At the upper end of the flowage, the stretch from the spillway down to the Blue Heron boat landing has riverine characteristics and can be productive for all the species year round. At mid flowage, the Mill Creek/Love Creek area is a good spot for all species of fish.

Boat Landings

There are three good boat landings on the Biron Flowage and they include:

  • Upper end: At the end of Blue Heron Lane, right off West River Drive
  • Lower end: In the Town of Biron off Biron Drive
  • Recommended landing: In Plover at Galecke Park (has two ramps and plenty of parking)
    • Note: Galecke Park requires day or season passes
